WELCOME TO ETHNO NEW ZEALAND 2023, January 20-29! Ethno New Zealand 2023 will be the the 5th edition of Ethno held in Aotearoa. It is open to all musicians age between 18-30. Ethno New Zealand will take place on Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island. It will be 9 days of young musicians teaching each other their traditional music, sharing cultural experiences, taking part in workshops and as a grand finale be sharing their music through performances for the wider audience. A Marae provides the perfect foundations for a pacific Ethno experience. This is a unique experience that will give you a deeper understanding of our indigenous peoples of New Zealand and our many other cultures that reside here in Aotearoa all while creating musical magic. The week will culminate in a number of performances, one of them at iconic Auckland Folk Festival. All participants are expected to attend the powhiri at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke Island on the 20th of January. Participants will need to arrive on Waiheke Island by 1pm in order to attend the powhiri. Participants are expected to attend the full camp which will end in the evening of the 29th January at Auckland Folk Festival in Kumeu, West Auckland. Spaces are limited, so sign up today! Confirmation can only be offered after we receive fee payment of NZ$600 per person. This cost includes workshops, performances, accommodation, food and transport for the duration of Ethno New Zealand. Please note: Food will not be covered at Auckland Folk Festival REFUNDS: If you need to cancel your registration you will receive a full refund only if you notify Ethno NZ 2 weeks prior to the commencement of the camp. After this period only a partial refund will be given. In the unlikely event that a participant decides to prematurely end their experience of the Ethno NZ camp, it will be up to the discretion of the Ethno NZ team if, and how much can be refunded. SOME MORE INFORMATION: Pōwhiri - Welcome It is very important that all participants are part of the pōwhiri welcome on the first day - otherwise you will not be allowed to come onto the marae. Please make sure that your travel arrangements allow for this. Sleeping Arrangements Marae style - everyone together in the main whare/house. You will need to provide your own sleeping bag and preferably mat/pillow etc. Camping at Auckland Folk Festival - All those that can, bring camping gear. Tikanga - Protocols For those who have never stayed on a marae there are some important protocols to be aware of. In the introduction session we will be sure that everyone is clear on these.
